Malawi CERT Engages Youth On Digital Citizenship And Cybersecurity

MACRA has stepped up its efforts to promote responsible digital behaviour among young people by engaging Roman Catholic youths from the Lilongwe Archdiocese on Digital Citizenship and Online Safety.

The awareness session was held during the Lilongwe Archdiocese Youth Rally at Chayamba Secondary School in Kasungu District. The event brought together hundreds of youths aged between 18 and 27 from nine deaneries.

Speaking during the awareness session, Elton Ng’ombe, a representative from the Malawi Computer Emergency Response Team (mwCERT), took the youths through practical steps for staying safe online. Ng’ombe emphasized the protection of personal information and how the youth can identify cyber threats and report cases of online abuse.

Lilongwe Archdiocese Youth Coordinator, Fr. Francis Chibota, commended MACRA for the session, saying it had equipped the youths with important cybersecurity knowledge.

MACRA is mandated by the Electronic Transactions and Cyber Security Act (2016) to ensure that all users of digital communication services are safe.

This includes conducting training on cybersecurity to equip users with skills and knowledge on the safe and responsible use of technology while promoting digital literacy.
