Malawi CERT Hosts a COP Trainer of Trainers Workshop for teachers in the Northern Region

We have successfully wrapped up our cyber drills and awareness campaign at the University of Livingstonia in Rumphi. The event was a huge success, with students and staff gaining new knowledge on cyber security and data protection.

Addressing the university community, Head of Malawi Computer Emergency Response Team (MwCERT), Christopher Banda emphasized the need for introducing cyber security programs at the institution. He said that this will help bridge the knowledge gap and enhance the fight against cyber-related crimes. 

Daniel Chiwoni, Head of Data Protection Authority shared on the on protection of personal data, outlining legal provisions on dealing with personal data. The presentation invited a number of questions touching on protecting personal data in the digital age. 

The cyber drills were engaging, comprehensive, and impactful, with many participants expressing appreciation for the initiative. Dr. Wezzie Chiziwa, the University Deputy Principal, promised they will stay committed so as to ensure that the cyber awareness exercise bears positive fruits.

We hosted the  Child Online Protection Trainer of Trainers workshop at Mary Mount Girls Secondary School in Mzuzu. The training brought together teachers from the Northern Region Education Division to equip them with skills to protect children in the digital space.

Daniel Chiwoni, Head of Data Protection, gave a presentation on how children’s information can be protected online, emphasizing the need for collaboration between parents and teachers.

Christopher Banda, Head of CERT, highlighted the risks children face online, observing that the youth are the most frequent users of Internet. He urged parents and teachers to monitor children’s online activities to ensure their safety.

Sam Tembo, Chief Education Quality Assurance Officer for the Northern Region Division, highlighted government’s commitment to zero child online exploitation and abuse through the “no phones in school” policy. He said government works with school administrations to enforce this policy, with disciplinary actions being enforced for non-compliance.

The workshop received positive feedback, with Island Mtambo, Mary Mount’s School Manager, commending the initiative and noting it will help address child online abuse.
