In today’s digital world, data is one of the most valuable assets and protecting it is more important than ever. Tourism professionals from across Malawi gathered for a Workshop on Data Protection for the Tourism Sector in Blantyre, a vital step toward building a safer, more trustworthy digital environment for travelers, operators, and stakeholders alike.

The workshop, organized by Data Protection Authority a unit under MACRA, brought together experts and industry leaders to discuss how the tourism sector can comply with Malawi’s Data Protection Act and adopt international best practices in information security.

Participants learned about:

The importance of safeguarding customer data in hospitality and travel operations.

Legal obligations and ethical responsibilities under Malawi’s data protection framework.

Practical strategies for secure data handling, storage, and sharing.

Building trust with tourists through transparency and responsible data management.

As Malawi continues to grow as a premier tourism destination in Africa, maintaining the privacy and trust of visitors is essential.

The head of Data Protection Authority Dan Chiwoni said the workshop is part of the ongoing activities being carried out by the Authority as part of its drive to raise awareness on the Data Protection Act 2024, the rights and responsibilities of data subjects as well as well as the obligations of data processors and controllers.

Data protection is shared responsibility, workshops like this ensure that all key players in the digital ecosystem uphold the highest standards of digital responsibility.
